Paisley, Lonend, Bedding Factory General View

SC 607003

Description Paisley, Lonend, Bedding Factory General View

Date 12/3/1968

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 607003

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Burnside Thread Works, Paisley, Renfrewshire These mills were built by J & J Clark as part of their Anchor Thread Mills, the main part of which was on the other side of the White Cart Water. This block was designed to be symmetrical about a central engine house, but only the western range was built. This shows the mills from the north-west, with the engine house at the far end. Similarities to the design of mills in the main part of the Anchor Mills suggests that this block was built in the 1870s or 1880s. After 1890 J & P Coats, who had taken over the Anchor Mills, closed this one. In 1924 it was occupied by Smith Brothers & Co, shawl manufacturers. In 1968 it was disused, and it was demolished in about 1970. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
