Scope and Content Engineering Works, Nos 13-23 Tradeston Street and No 46 Centre Street, Glasgow This large works was built in 1858-60 for Randolph, Elder & Co, to designs by William Spence, mainly to build compound marine engines to John Elder's patent of 1853. Part of the site had previously been occupied by Randolph, Elliot & Co, who were noted millwrights. This shows the Centre Street frontage of the Spence building. This four-storeyed section housed light machine shops making parts to be assembled in the impressive erecting shops on the Tradeston Street side of the works. In 1874 John Elder & Co, by that time owners of this works, moved their works to their Fairfield Shipbuilding Yard in Govan. This works was subsequently acquired by the Alexander Cross Seed Co Ltd, who used it as a seed store. It was demolished in 1970. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
