Scope and Content Netherplace Bleachworks, Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire This was the last of the many rural textile finishing works established in east Renfrewshire in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1968 it belonged to Wallace & Co (Netherplace) Ltd, and was engaged in 'customer' finishing of fabrics from a wide range of sources. This shows a washing machine, part of the bleaching equipment. What look like tapes inside the machine are in fact cloth in 'rope' form, being washed by passing through hot water in the lower part of the machine. The parts of the machine in contact with cloth are wooden, to avoid staining the cloth, as would happen with metal parts. This works was still using 'traditional' bleaching methods in 1968, with some 19th-century equipment. The works no longer bleaches, but is the Scottish base for Coats Viyella.
