Scope and Content Kingshill No 1 Colliery, Allanton, North Lanarkshire This pit was sunk by the Coltness Iron Co Ltd to work a seam of coking coal, and opened in 1919. It had two shafts, both with steam winding engines. The downcast, used for winding coal, had the larger of the two engines. This shows the downcast shaft winding engine, built by Andrew Barclay, Sons & Co Ltd in c.1920. It was an advanced engine for the Scottish coalfield, fitted with Corliss inlet and drop exhaust valves, and with trunk guides for the piston rods. This colliery closed in 1968, but the washery, installed in 1952, was retained to deal with coal from Kingshill No 3 pit, which lasted until 1974. Both sites have now been cleared.
