Scope and Content Forth Rail Bridge, Alloa, Clackmannan This bridge was opened in 1885 by the Alloa Railway, a subsidiary of the Caledonian Railway, and supplanted a ferry from South Alloa to Alloa. It was designed by Blyth & Westland, and had bowed truss spans carried on cast-iron piers. There was an opening span near the Alloa end. This shows the swing span being swung. A steam engine in the cabin drives, through gearing, a pinion which meshes with the large fixed gear ring on top of the cast iron columns, thus turning the span. The wooden stairways give access to the wooden pier which protect the cast iron columns. This was taken on the last day of services to Alloa on 29 January 1968. The spans were then removed, leaving the piers. The engine, built at St Rollox Works, was taken to the Glasgow Transport Museum, and is now in the Scottish Maritime Museum at Irvine.
