Scope and Content Buchanan Street Goods Station, Glasgow Buchanan Street Station was opened in 1849 by the Caledonian Railway, and provided goods facilities in a station to the south of the passenger station. It was enlarged and partly rebuilt on several occasions between then and 1905, to cope with changing patterns of traffic. This shows the main range of buildings from the south-east, as revealed by demolition of surrounding buildings. To the left is the front of the main goods shed, with its projecting block of offices, while to the right is the enormous grain store. This was one of three large goods stations on the edge of central Glasgow, all within horse-lorry range of much of the city. The decline of rail-borne freight and railway rationalisation led to the closure of this station in 1966, and it had been demolished by 1971. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
