Scope and Content Shearer & Harvey Glasgow Candle Works, No 164 Copland Road, Glasgow This works was founded in about 1897 by Shearer & Harvey, candlemakers. The interest of this little factory lies in the continuation of candlemaking here, by the same firm, into the 21st century. This shows the Copland Road frontage of the works from the south-east. As can be seen, it is a simple shed. In 1968 it was shared between the candle works and Alex McQueen & Co Ltd, Govan Oil & Colour Works, though the nature of the relationship is not known. In the 1890s paraffin wax candles and nightlights were still widely used, especially for lighting in poorer homes. The candles now produced by the firm are used mainly as a decorative alternative to electric light. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
