Scope and Content Alloa Glass Works, Glasshouse Loan, Alloa, Clackmannan This works was founded in 1750 to make glass bottles. It had a chequered history in its early days, and for a time abandoned bottle making for the manufacture of window glass. It was probably originally engaged in making bottles for the export of beer. This shows part of the base of the disused kiln, showing its construction. As originally built, the cone functioned as a large chimney, providing draught for a furnace in the centre of the base, and also a current of air to cool the glass blowers working round the furnace. This works has for many years belonged to United Glass, originally a subsidiary of The Distillers' Co Ltd, and now of United Distillers & Vintners. It was greatly enlarged in the 1970s, and is now Scotland's only glass bottle works. The cone disused in 1968 has been demolished, but this one has been preserved.
