Wester Auchengreich Colliery General View

SC 604287

Description Wester Auchengreich Colliery General View

Date 1967

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 604287

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Wester Auchengeich Colliery, Lenzie, Glasgow This colliery was sunk c.1909 by James Nimmo & Co Ltd, and was relatively modest in scale. It was a very compact pit, with its two shafts side by side, and was fitted with electric winders from the start. This shows the colliery from the south-west, with the screens building to the left, in a continuous block with the winding engine house. Part of the bing, for tipping waste, is just visible on the left. This was one of the last collieries to work in north Lanarkshire. It closed in 1968. Until 1964 it had its own railway line from Cadder marshalling yard, east of Lenzie. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
