Scope and Content Banff Distillery, Banffshire (Aberdeenshire council rea) This distillery replaced an earlier one of the same name, and was built by James Simpson Jnr.. It was burned down in 1877, and rebuilt. In 1932 James Simpson and Sons Ltd were liquidated and the distillery was bought by Scottish Malt Distillers. This view shows the interior of the filling store. The oak vat contained newly distilled spirit, transferred from the intermediate spirit receiver adjacent to the spirit still. The hose pipes were used to fill the oak casks in which the spirit was matured This distillery was one of a number of smaller distilleries closed in 1983 by Scottish Malt Distillers as a result of a downturn in the demand for Scotch whisky. Unlike some of the others it was demolished soon after. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
