Scope and Content Banff Distillery, Banffshire (Aberdeenshire council rea) This distillery replaced an earlier one of the same name, and was built by James Simpson Jnr.. It was burned down in 1877, and rebuilt. In 1932 James Simpson and Sons Ltd were liquidated and the distillery was bought by Scottish Malt Distillers. This view shows the tun room, with its large wooden wash-backs. The electric motors on top of the backs drove revolving metal strips which cut the 'head' off the fermenting malt liquor to prevent the foam spilling out of the back. This distillery was one of a number of smaller distilleries closed in 1983 by Scottish Malt Distillers as a result of a downturn in the demand for Scotch whisky. Unlike some of the others it was demolished soon after. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
