Date 9/5/1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 603916

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Banff Distillery, Banffshire (Aberdeenshire council rea) This distillery replaced an earlier one of the same name, and was built by James Simpson Jun.. It was burned down in 1877, and rebuilt. In 1932 James Simpson and Sons Ltd were liquidated and the distillery was bought by Scottish Malt Distillers. This view shows the interior of the stillhouse, with the wash still on the left and the spirit still on the right. The cast iron tank was one of the chargers for the stills. Note the low headroom, indicative of an early date. This distillery was one of a number of smaller distilleries closed in 1983 by Scottish Malt Distillers as a result of a downturn in the demand for Scotch whisky. Unlike some of the others it was demolished soon after. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
