Scope and Content Part of Clydeholm Shipyard (Scotstoun Shipbuilding Yard), No 903 South Street, Glasgow This shipbuilding yard was founded in 1855 by Barclay, Curle & Co to replace their original yard further up the River Clyde at Stobcross, the site of which was required for harbour improvement. It was almost completely rebuilt in the 1950s and early 1960s. This shows the eastern part of the yard, with a large prefabrication shed in the background, and a heavy rail-mounted crane for lifting prefabricated sections of ship into place for assembly on the berth. The vessel being built was a bulk carrier for Norwegian owners. This was probably the most thoroughly modernised of the upper Clyde shipbuilding yards, but was closed in about 1968 and dismantled. Some of the sheds were adapted to other uses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
