Scope and Content Entrance Lock to Old and Junction Docks, Grangemouth, Falkirk The Old and Junction Docks were the first of the Grangemouth docks for larger vessels than could use the Forth and Clyde Canal. They were built by the canal company between 1838 and 1859, with an entrance lock from the River Carron. This shows the west end of the entrance lock, with the top gates, and one of the hand-operated crab winches used for operating the gates. In the background is a former power station, latterly used in connection with the repair of ships in the lock. It was the Forth and Clyde Canal Company which developed Grangemouth as a port. They even built a railway to link the docks to the main railway system. It was on account of this rail-linked dock system that the Caledonian Railway bought the canal in 1867.
