Scope and Content Basin on Forth and Clyde Canal, Grangemouth, Falkirk The Forth and Clyde Canal was authorised by an Act of Parliament obtained in 1768. Construction started at the Grangemouth end, with John Smeaton as engineer. The cut commenced at a basin off the navigable River Carron. This shows the basin between Locks 1 and 2, with Lock 1 on the left. The basin had been de-watered pending infilling prior to the construction of a warehouse on the site. This basin was essentially a wet dock at the entrance to the canal. The first town of Grangemouth grew up round this basin, with hotels and inns to serve canal users and employees. The buildings in this view were remnants of that settlement, though not the earliest ones. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
