Scope and Content Tidal weir, Glasgow Green, Glasgow This is the fourth weir on the River Clyde at or about this point. All were built to limit the effects of tides on the river. The earliest two had locks to allow vessels to navigate upriver. This one and its predecessor have, or had, moveable barriers. This shows the structure frrom the north-east. The masonry survives from the weir designed by Sir Benjamin Baker and built between 1894 and 1901, but the steelwork was rebuilt in the 1940s, being completed in 1949. The weir has three spans, each of which has a steel gate. Together they impound the water upstream, allowing flood water to flow over the top. When required, for navigation, the gates can be lowered to allow vessels to sail over them. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
