Scope and Content Aqueduct, Stockingfield Junction, Forth and Clyde Canal, Lochburn Road, Glasgow This aqueduct marks the beginning of the last section of the Forth and Clyde Canal to be built, from Maryhill to Bowling. This section was completed between 1786 and 1790, and was designed by Robert Whitworth, engineer. This shows the south face of the aqueduct, showing the subtlety of its design. The abutments and wing walls are curved in elevation as well as in plan, a feature calling for exceptional skill on the part of the masons. This is the only one of the three or four small aqueducts designed by Whitworth which is still in use. It is adjacent to Stockingfield Junction, where the Glasgow branch of the Canal diverges from the main line. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
