Scope and Content Scotstoun Shipbuilding Yard, No 903 South Street, Glasgow This yard was founded in 1861 by Charles Connell. It was enlarged and modernised on several occasions, and was consistently one of the most profitable shipbuilding yards on the upper River Clyde. This shows the South Street frontage of the yard from the north-west. The main office was at the far end, and the three-storeyed range contained design offices. Connells obviously did not spend money on ostentation, but their yard was very economically and profitably run. The firm became part of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1968, and the yard was partly re-equipped. It closed when the company was liquidated in 1971, but was retained in reserve for a time by Govan Shipbuilders. It has now been dismantled. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
