Scope and Content Blythswood Shipyard, No 1465 South Street, Glasgow This yard was founded in 1919 by the Blythswood Shipbuilding Co Ltd. The founding directors were both members of shipbuilding families, and had had experience in first-class yards. The company specialised in building tankers, which required a higher standard of riveting than other merchant ships. This shows the South Street frontage of the yard, looking north-west. The yard closed in 1964, and was purchased by Yarrow & Co, the next-door neighbours, in 1965, hence the name painted on the premises. The Blythswood was the last new shipbuilding yard established on the River Clyde, and was very successful during its 45-year lifespan. The business was wound up when the directors could see that their traditional products were no longer in demand. The yard was eventually integrated with that of Yarrows Ltd.
