Scope and Content Albion Motor Works, No 1272 South Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1902 by the Albion Motor Co Ltd to replace premises in Finnieston Street rented from the Anchor Line. At first the firm made motor cars and commercial vehicles, but from 1913 concentrated on the latter. During World War I the premises were enlarged to produce military vehicles. This shows the works offices from the south-west. These were built in 1912 to designs by A N Paterson, in Edwardian Baroque style. The works was sandwiched between South Street and a large railway goods yard, a strategic position. The firm amalgamated with Leyland Ltd in 1951, and the works continued to make complete vehicles until the 1970s. After Leyland amalgamated with the Dutch firm DAF the works was moved into the former Harland & Wolff works across the road, and the making of complete vehicles abandoned.
