Scope and Content Steam winding engine, Lingerwood Colliery, Midlothian This coal pit was originally sunk in 1798, and was modernised by the Lothian Coal Company. Latterly it was operated in connection with the much larger Lady Victoria Colliery, and after Lingerwood closed in 1967 its winding gear was retained to give safety cover for Lady Victoria Colliery. This shows the left side of the steam winding engine, built by Grant Ritchie & Co, and later much altered. The drop-valve gear is, unusually, operated by a 'wrist plate', which oscillates round a pivot. The engine had not been used for some months, but was in good condition. The other winding engine was electric, made by Fullerton, Hodgart & Barclay Ltd of Paisley. It was retained in operating condition until the closure of Lady Victoria Colliery in 1981. Like this steam winder, it has now been scrapped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
