Scope and Content Kilmaurs Mill and Bridge, No 42 Fenwick Road, Kilmaurs, East Ayrshire This mill is probably on an old site, but it was rebuilt in the early 19th century as a large water-powered corn mill, on the Carmel Water. In the early 20th century its waterwheel was replaced by a water turbine. In 1967 the mill was operating, but had been electrified. This shows the mill from the south, with the kiln on the left. The style of roof-ridge ventilator is characteristic of central Ayrshire watermills. Note the first-floor loading door, with a hinged chute for sliding sacks into lorries. This was one of the largest and finest watermill buildings in Ayrshire. It fell out of use in about 1970, and later it was proposed to convert it into flats. However a bulge in the front wall was so unsound that the mill was demolished during the 1970s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
