Scope and Content Atlantic Mills, No 26 Walkinshaw Street, Glasgow This complex was founded in 1864 by D & J Anderson, shirting manufacturers, and apparently extended on a number of occasions. The firm specialised in making high quality shirt fabrics to exclusive designs, mainly for export. This shows the works from the north-east, with part of the range of north-lit weaving sheds on the left, and the preparation and warehouse block to the right. The chimney belonged to the mills, which were originally powered by steam. From the late 19th century, Glasgow's power-loom weaving industry concentrated on the weaving of specialised fine fabrics, such as shirtings and fancy muslins. These were, however, fashion goods, and vulnerable to changes in taste. This works closed in the early 1960s, and was demolished in 1967-9. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
