Scope and Content Canal Aqueduct, Bilsland Drive, Glasgow This aqueduct was built in 1879 to carry the Forth and Clyde Canal's Glasgow Branch over a new street, Bilsland Drive, constructed to open up the area to the north of the canal for development. It was built at the expense of Glasgow Corporation. This shows the aqueduct from the west, showing the twisting route the road had to take to go under the canal at right angles. The deep segmental inner arch carried the bed of the canal, and the lighter semicircular arch supported the towpath. This is one of three similar aqueducts in Glasgow, the others being at Maryhill Road and Possil Road on the Forth and Clyde Canal, and at Milnbank on the Monkland Canal. The use of lighter outer arches was introduced by Thomas Telford in the 1820s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
