Scope and Content Harland & Wolff's Govan Shipyard, Clydebrae Street, Govan Road and Water Row, Glasgow This yard occupied the site of three smaller yards, including two which had belonged to Robert Napier. Harland & Wolff of Belfast purchased the site in 1912, and laid out a new yard. This was the first part of the firm's expansion on the River Clyde. This shows the Water Row frontage of the platers' shop, looking south-west, with the Govan terminal of the vehicular Govan Ferry in the foreground. The change in scale between the two sections of the platers' shed is striking. The yard closed in 1963, and the main Govan Road building and berths were cleared in 1965. This shed was demolished in the early 1970s. Housing has now been built on the site. The Govan Ferry was withdrawn when the Clyde Tunnel was opened in 1959. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
