Scope and Content Pointhouse Shipyard, No 250 Ferry Road, Glasgow This yard was founded in 1862 by A & J Inglis, to build hulls for the engines they were building in Anderston. The firm became renowned for building Clyde passenger steamers and other small specialist craft. The firm was acquired during World War I by Harland & Wolff of Belfast to help secure their position in the event of Ireland becoming independent. This shows the River Clyde frontage of the yard from Govan, with the Partick terminals of the Govan vehicular and passenger ferries to the left. By 1967 most of the Pointhouse yard had been demolished. The yard closed in 1962, as part of the rationalisation of Harland & Wolff's non- Belfast interests. The yard had a patent slip for ship repair, and latterly operated jointly with D & W Henderson's Meadowside yard's ship repair business, also owned by Harland & Wolff.
