Scope and Content Shieldhall Sewage Works, Renfrew Road, Glasgow This works was built for Glasgow Corporation between 1898 and 1910 to process the sewage of the south side of the city, and of the burgh of Govan, brought to it by an intercepting sewer. It used the chemical precipitation method of treatment, producing a sludge which was dumped at sea. This shows the offices of the works, which cover a large area. The facilities behind the wall included covered screening and pumping machinery, and large treatment and settling tanks. There was a wharf from which hopper vessels took sludge to be dumped in the River Clyde estuary. This works, considerably modernised, still performs the task of treating the sewage of Glasgow south of the River Clyde. European Union regulations now ban the dumping of sludge at sea, so it is disposed of in other ways. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
