Scope and Content Coal Washery, Waterside Colliery, by Dalmellington, East Ayrshire This plant was built in the 1930s by Bairds & Dalmellington Ltd to process all the coal mined in the upper Doon Valley. It was linked with all the pits and mines by railways which remained steam-worked until the late 1970s. This shows one of the locomotives which worked at the washery, shunting coal wagons and side-tipping waste wagons, some of which can be seen to the right. Note that the locomotive has a tender, made from a coal truck, with supplies of coal to allow it to operate for longer between refuelling stops. The mining industry in the area was still very active in 1967, but was run down in the 1970s, with the last deep mine closing in 1979. The washery was demolished in the early 1980s. Several of the locomotives have been preserved. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
