Scope and Content Scott's Mill, Gatehouse of Fleet, Dumfries & Galloway Gatehouse of Fleet was founded as a planned cotton-spinning village by James Murray of Broughton and Cally in 1784. The main mill complex was at the west end of the village, and was built by Birtwhistle & Sons. This small mill was built c.1790 by Thomas Scott & Co. This shows the front of the mill after it had been converted into a dwelling house and sawmill. The sawmill section is on the left, with a wooden extension to cover a sawbench. The dwelling house is on the right, with its later porch. In 1967 this was the only roofed cotton mill in Gatehouse of Fleet, the Birtwhistle mills having been unroofed after a period of use as a bobbin mill. The larger of these mills has now been regenerated as the 'Mill on the Fleet'. Scott's mill is now all housing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
