Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 602253

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Troqueer Mills, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway These tweed mills were founded in 1866 by Walter Scott & Sons to make tweeds. This was one of the largest blocks of textile workshops in Scotland outside the Paisley thread trade. This shows the river frontage of the mills, built of polychrome brick, and similar in style to the spinning mill in the same family's Nithsdale Mills on the opposite bank of the River Nith. The Scott family dominated the Dumfries woollen trade, with three mills: this at Troqueer, another at Kingholm Quay, and finally the Nithsdale Mills. All closed in the inter-war years. This one has now been incorporated into an industrial estate, and is in multiple use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
