Scope and Content Kingholm Quay, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Kingholm Quay was rebuilt in about 1836-40 with a basin capable of taking deeper-draughted vessels than could navigate to Dumfries. The basin is at an angle to the navigable channel of the River Nith, and was fitted with sluices to allow silt to be scoured out of the basin at low tide. This shows the junction of the basin and the River Nith, looking south, with the main channel of the river on the right. The siting of the transit sheds indicates that there is a quay on the channel as well as the berthage in the basin. This harbour, and Glencaple Quay, nearer the mouth of the River Nith, seem to have been used in the post-World War II period, but improved road transport put paid to much coastal shipping, and by 1967 the basin was only being used by small pleasure craft, as seen here.
