Scope and Content Windmill, Maxwelltown, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway This windmill was built in 1798 to complement the burgh watermill, also on the Maxwelltown side of the River Nith. It was not a success, and in 1834 it was converted into a museum, with a 'camera obscura' installed on top. This shows the mill as adapted as a museum. The top was added to form the camera obscura, and the surrounds to the doors and windows, known as architraves, were inserted to give the building a 'polite' appearance. Windmills of this type, with fixed towers, on which wooden caps were mounted to carry the sails, were relatively popular in those parts of Scotland where water power was scarce. The development of cheap steam engines halted their development. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
