Scope and Content Dumfries Mill, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway This mill was built in about 1780 to designs by Andrew Meikle, millwright. It was originally five storeys high. An addition was made at the south end in about 1840. The main range was cut down to two storeys in about 1900. This shows the mill from the south-east, with what was left of the main range to the right. The riverside wall was probably originally a wharf on the River Nith, which was navigable to Dumfries until the mid-19th century. The ramp was probably for watering horses. This was one of the largest burgh mills in Scotland, drawing its water supply from a massive diagonal weir or caul on the River Nith. By 1967 it was only used as a warehouse. It was converted in about 1990 into a Robert Burns Heritage Centre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
