Scope and Content Bridge of Cree, Newton Stewart, Dumfries & Galloway This bridge was built in 1812-13 to designs by John Rennie. It links the town of Newton Stewart with the village of Minnigaff, and replaced a bridge of 1745, probably because the latter was not suitable for long-distance coach traffic. This shows part of the bridge from the south-west. The small rise to the centre, and the slenderness of the piers are advanced features, reflecting the influence of French design. The weir in front protects the foundations of the bridge from scouring by the action of the river flowing by. This bridge carried main road traffic until Newton Stewart was by-passed in the 1980s, and is still locally important. Until local government reorganisation in 1975 it spanned the boundary between Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
