Date 20/8/1967

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 602213

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Palnackie Harbour, Dumfries & Galloway This may well be a very old harbour, but probably took its present form in the 19th century. It was formed where the Palnackie Burn flows into the navigable River Urr. Due to the softness of the ground, the quay walls are formed of wooden piles, with corrugated iron or wood to hold back the earth. This shows part of the north quay, with a recently repaired section of quay wall to the left. The more traditional approach to walling can be seen behind the fishing boat, and to the right can be seen an accumulation of river mud. The Urr navigation was used by trading vessels until the early 1900s, when motor vehicles took over local trade not catered for by the railways. Since then Palnackie has been used by fishing boats and pleasure craft. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
