Scope and Content King's Corn Mill, Mill Street, Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Argyll & Bute This large water-powered corn mill was built to serve the needs of the town of Rothesay for oatmeal and animal provender. It was probably built by the Bute estate. The town grew rapidly in the late 18th century when cotton mills were established there. This shows the mill from the south-east. It had been out of use as a mill for many years, and was used as a store. The use of a hipped roof was unusual in a corn mill, as was the near-symmetry of the façade. After the cotton industry in Rothesay declined, it became a popular holiday resort and day-trip destination. When that use fell away from the 1960s, the town fell on hard times, and this building, instead of being converted to another use, was demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
