Scope and Content Innellan Pier, Innellan, Argyll & Bute The first part of this pier was built in 1850, and it was extended in 1900 to accommodate larger steamers. It was constructed to serve a development of marine villas started in 1843, for summer occupation by upriver businessmen. This shows the pier from the north-east. The end of the old pier can be seen below the end of the terrace of buildings. The short tower on the pier-head building was for signalling to approaching steamers. With the development of better road transport traffic at many of the Clyde steamer piers declined to the point where steamer calls were no longer necessary. This pier closed in 1972, and though it was temporarily reused in 1974, it is now derelict. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
