Scope and Content Merino Spinning Mill, No 335 St Vincent Street, Glasgow This mill was built in about 1835 for C S Cochran & Co, worsted and woollen spinners, to process merino wool imported from Australia through Glasgow harbour. It was subsequently used for a variety of purposes. This shows the front of the building, looking across St Vincent Street. There are three floors below entrance level. Wilson, Guthrie were the printers who were the last occupants of the building. The attempt made here to introduce worsted spinning was short-lived, and cotton remained the staple textile industry in Glasgow. The only branch of the wool textile industry that took root here was carpet weaving. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
