Scope and Content Dumbreck Coke Ovens, Dumbreck Colliery, North Lanarkshire These by-product-recovery coke ovens were built early in World War II to recover coal tar products needed in explosives and dyestuffs manufacture. The coke was used in the blast furnaces at Gartsherrie Ironworks. This is a general view of the ovens, with the charging machine on the right. This ran on the rails seen in the foreground to allow each of the chambers of the oven to be charged individually. The machine also pushed the coke out at the end of the process. These ovens were built by William Baird & Co Ltd, who operated the collieries in the Kilsyth area to supply fuel for their Gartsherrie blast furnaces in Coatbridge. For many years they had their own train to take the coke to the ironworks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
