Scope and Content Upper leading light, Temple Crescent, Crail Harbour, Fife This pair of leading lights was constructed to guide vessels along a safe channel to the entrance to Crail Harbour. They are mounted on harled masonry piers, and in 1979 the lights were in square lanterns of street gas-lamp type. This view shows the upper of the two lights, situated in a small landscaped area above the main road through Crail. The street-lamp-style lantern is evident. By 1979 the lamp itself was electrically lit. These lights were probably installed in the later 19th century, and were probably originally lit by gas from a small gas works beside the harbour. In the 1980s the lanterns were replaced by modern electric lighting units. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
