Scope and Content Bascule Bridge, Forth and Clyde Canal, Firhill Road, Glasgow Built in the early 19th century, this was a standard Forth and Clyde Canal bascule bridge, spanning the Glasgow branch immediately to the west of the Firhill basins, originally built for the storage of floating timber. This shows the bridge from the south-west, with the Firhill Foundry of Shaw & McInnes in the background. The two counter-balanced leaves of the bridge could be opened by hand cranks which operated gearing at each end. As in many other cases, the closure of the Canal at the end of 1962 was followed by the replacement of this bascule bridge by a culvert, in about 1969. The culvert was replaced by a navigable bridge during the Glasgow Canal Project in 1990. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
