Scope and Content Glasgow Rubber Works, Nos 125-9 Shuna Street, Glasgow This works was founded in about 1876 by George McLellan & Co, india-rubber, asbestos and waterproof manufacturers. Between 1895 and 1914 major extensions were built to designs by George Simpson, engineer. This shows what was probably the original factory of c.1876, somewhat obscured by later additions, but still showing the Classical symmetry and detailing of its design. In this photograph, the wharf on the Canal is showing signs of wear and tear. The company achieved a wide reputation for its products in the Victorian period, and by 1893 had warehouses in Glasgow, London, Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, Belfast and Dublin.
