Scope and Content Glasgow Lead & Colour Works, No 50 Ruchill Street, Glasgow This works was founded in about 1874 by Alexander, Fergusson & Co. In 1881 the firm had lead works in McAlpine Street, and these works at Ruchill Wharf for white lead, red lead, litharge, paint, colour and varnish manufacture. This shows what was probably a white lead works built in 1904 on the north side of Ruchill Street. The use of red and white brick at that date was unusual. The Forth and Clyde Canal runs under the road in the foreground. White lead, a carbonate of lead, was made here by the 'Dutch' process, in which strips of lead were placed over pots containing vinegar, and the pots separated by layers of tan bark. The resulting lead carbonate was scraped off the lead at intervals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
