Scope and Content Empire Match Factory (Ruchill Sawmills), No 201 Shuna Street, Glasgow This factory incorporated parts of the Ruchill Sawmills built in about 1885 for D McFarlane & Son, and a refuse destructor built in 1901, with later additions and extensions. This shows the factory from the south-west, illustrating the lack of coherence in its appearance. Note the Forth and Clyde Canal in the foreground, with a wharf used for handling timber. Bryant & May were Britain's leading manufacturers of matches for many years, competing with Swedish and other European manufacturers. With declining demand, they phased out match manufacture in Scotland in the 1970s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
