Scope and Content Cotton Spinning Mill, Nos 189-203 Rutherglen Road, Glasgow This is one of a pair of mills which make up an L-plan. This one follows the line of Rutherglen Road, and was apparently built in 1817-21 for Robert Humphreys, cotton spinner. This shows the building from the south-west, with the linked mill at No 189 Rutherglen Road on the left. Note the blocked-up pend which gave accesss to a courtyard to the rear. Both mills have fireproof brick-arched interiors. Cotton spinning and weaving developed in this part of Glasgow from about 1810, with employees drawn from the existing spinning industry in Calton, Bridgeton and Dalmarnock. These mills were converted into offices in the early 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
