Scope and Content Barrowfield Weaving Factory, Nos 103-11 French Street, Glasgow This works was built between 1889 and 1899 for John Brown & Son, power-loom muslin manufacturers, to designs by Miles S Gibson, architect. Browns specialised in fancy muslins for furnishings and dressmaking. This shows the office block, on the corner of French Street (right) and Norman Street. This was built with polychrome terracotta brick façades in 1891. Note the Greek key pattern frieze between the ground and first floors. The elaborate decorative treatment of this building reflects the elaboration of the fabrics produced by this company, who were probably the leaders in Glasgow in making patterned muslins from the 1890s to World War I.
