Scope and Content Barrowfield Weaving Factory, Nos 103-11 French Street, Glasgow This works was built between 1889 and 1899 for John Brown & Son, power-loom muslin manufacturers, to designs by Miles S Gibson, architect. Browns specialised in fancy muslins for furnishings and dressmaking. This shows part of the French Street frontage of the building, which is faced in red terracotta brick. Note the use of low-relief panelling to give variety to what would otherwise be a very blank façade. The central block was built in 1899. The Glasgow power-loom weaving industry reacted to competition from the Lancashire cotton industry by specialising in 'fancy' fabrics rather than high-volume, low-value plain cloth. Few firms survived World War I and the subsequent trade depression. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
