Scope and Content Acme Machine Works, Nos 2-8 Orr Place, Glasgow This works was founded in about 1886 by the Acme Machine Co, wringer makers. Before washing machines came into general use in the 1950s and 1960s wringers were used to remove much of the water from textiles during domestic washing. This shows the 1880s block to the left. It was on an L-plan, with a wing similar in scale to the frontage block at the far end. The more modern block on the right may also have been part of the complex. The mansard roof was added in 1909. By 1967 the manufacture of wringers had ceased, and the premises were occupied by James Marshall (Glasgow) Ltd, manufacturers of macaroni, and of the patent wheat products Semolina and Farola, used for making milk puddings.
