Scope and Content Chemical Works, Nos 31-3 Townsend Street, Glasgow This complex was built from 1856 for Joseph Townsend, chemical manufacturer, the original buildings being designed by John Dingwall of Helensburgh, architect. The complex occupied a large area, and had been much altered by 1967. This view shows part of the complex during the demolition of the southern range to make way for the M8 urban motorway. This section has an exposed cast iron and steel frame of unusual design, which probably dates from the 1880s. Townsend made a range of chemicals, including arsenicals, and built what was the tallest chimney in the world for many years to disperse noxious fumes. Known as Townsend's Stalk, it was 468 feet high and was demolished in 1927. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
