Scope and Content Chemical Works, Nos 31-3 Townsend Street, Glasgow This complex was built from 1856 for Joseph Townsend, chemical manufacturer, the original buildings being designed by John Dingwall of Helensburgh, architect. The complex occupied a large area, and had been much altered by 1967. This shows the complex during the demolition of the southern range to make way for the M8 urban motorway. This revealed the south frontage of the north range, with massive cast iron columns supporting the upper floors. This works was one of the largest in Glasgow, and had the tallest chimney in the world for many years. Known as Townsend's Stalk, it was 468 feet high and was demolished in 1927. Part of the buildings in this view have survived, re-fronted. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
